Food Sanitation Program
  • Review and approve plans for new & existing facilities.
  • Inspections and issue operating permits for all food facilities & temporary events.
  • Foodborne illness investigation and consumer complaint investigation.
  • Training courses for food service managers & employees.
Helpful Hints:

- Report suspected cases of foodborne illnesses to the Health Department promptly.
- Contact the Health Department for an inspection before building or purchasing a food facility.

Potable Water Program

  • Assistance in locating water systems from sources of pollution.
  • Issuance of well construction permits & well inspections.
  • Information on water sampling and proper well sealing available.
Helpful Hints:
- Periodic sampling of your water is recommended.
- The proper sealing of an abandoned well helps prevent groundwater contamination and is required by law. Call this department before you seal your well.

Private Sewage Disposal

  • Assistance in determining type of sewage disposal system for your property.
  • Issue on-site wastewater disposal system permits, inspections & provide maintenance information.
Helpful Hints:
- Periodic inspection & pumping of tanks is essential in preventing premature failure of system.
- Malfunctioning systems can expose the public to live bacteria and virus and need repair as soon as possible.
- In order to obtain a building permit you must have an approved water & sewage system permit.

Ultra-violet Radiation Program

  • Tanning facility inspections.
  • Information on ultra-violet radiation and skin cancer
  • Call the Health Department before you begin construction of your tanning salon.
  • Ultra-violet radiation can cause skin cancer, premature aging and drying of the skin.
  • Follow exposure schedules on the bed to prevent burning.

Tattoo & Body Piercing Program

  • Grundy County has an ordinance that addresses tattooing and body piercing. (Ear piercing is exempt from regulation).
  • Report all unlicensed facilities due to possible disease transmission. i.e. HIV, Hepatitis B. No facilities are currently licensed.
Nuisance Complaint Program
  • Many complaints are handled by many different agencies. If we can not help you, we will refer you to someone who can.
  • Arbo-Viral Surveillance Program
    • Coordinates with Illinois Department of Public Health in surveillance of West Nile Virus activity in bird population
    • Provides public education regarding mosquito breeding.
    • Works with villages who are involved with mosquito abatement.

- Contact the Health Department to report recently deceased crows or bluejays.

Indoor Air & Radon Program

  • We work with toxicologists from the State Health Department to assist with indoor air & radon problems. Information is available at the Health Department.
